Course Overview
On your course, you'll cover all the major
aspects of digital photography - giving you the
skills and knowledge you need to get the best out
of today's digital cameras and software.
Students will receive a FREE
copy of Photoshop Elements 6 for PC (r.r.p. £69.99),
as well as a CD containing full resolution images
and video tutorials to aid students in the use of
Photoshop.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites but students will
need to meet the system requirements for the
software and have the relevant equipment.
Please note that City & Guilds portfolio registration
fees are additional to registration fees.
Computer System Requirements
As students are supplied with software, the
below system requirements must be met:
- Intel® Pentium® 4, Pentium M, or Intel
Centrino® 1.3GHz (or compatible) processor
- Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2
or Windows Vista®
- 256MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
- 1.5GB of available hard-disk space
- Color monitor with 16-bit color video card
- 1,024x768 monitor resolution at 96dpi or
less
- Microsoft DirectX 9 compatible display

Students must also own either a Digital SLR
camera or a Digital Compact camera and it is
recommended that access to basic studio equipment
(e.g. tripod or camera flash) is also available.

This unit provides a practical introduction
to the skills and knowledge required to study
and use digital photography. It also
explores basic techniques and present day
applications, coupled with the creative
potential of the medium.
- Digital Darkroom Techniques
This unit provides a practical
introduction to the skills and knowledge
required for the study of the creative process
of image making using digital imaging
techniques. It will teach students about the use
of Photoshop Elements, its features and how they
can be applied to their photographs.
- People and Children
Photography
Students will learn about the particular
techniques and skills relevant to taking
pictures of People and Children.
Assessment Details
At the end of each unit students will be
required to sit a test paper which consists of
written and practical questions which they forward
to their course tutor. Students will also be
required to keep a workbook of their studies and
they are also required to submit a portfolio based
on list of themes at the end of each unit.
Please note that students can submit their
assessment via CD or DVD, in which case a CD/DVD
writer will also be required.
